Detecting the most effective cleanup locations using network theory to reduce marine plastic debris: a case study in the Galapagos Marine Reserve

چکیده
Abstract. The Galapagos Marine Reserve was established in 1986 to ensure protection of the islands' unique biodiversity. Unfortunately, islands are polluted by marine plastic debris and island authorities face challenge effectively remove from its shorelines owing limited resources. To optimize efforts, we have developed a methodology identify most effective cleanup locations on Islands using network theory. A is constructed Lagrangian simulation describing flow macroplastic between various within Reserve, where nodes represent along coastline edges likelihood leaving one location beaching at another. We found four centralities that provide best ranking effort based impact metrics. Locations with high retention rate particularly favorable for cleanup. results indicate centrality finding good strategy heavily regions if distribution coastlines unknown resources available.

Governability assessment of the Galapagos Marine Reserve
The Galapagos Marine Reserve is one of the most recognized marine protected areas in the world, due mainly to its unique natural features. Little is known, however, about its social counterpart. This research aims to explore the Galapagos Marine Reserve governance by following the governability assessment framework, which is based on the interactive governance perspective. We claim that improve...

Plastic debris has significant environmental and economic impacts in marine systems. Monitoring is crucial to assess the efficacy of measures implemented to reduce the abundance of plastic debris, but it is complicated by large spatial and temporal heterogeneity in the amounts of plastic debris and by our limited understanding of the pathways followed by plastic debris and its long-term fate. T...
متن کاملLife in the "plastisphere": microbial communities on plastic marine debris.
Plastics are the most abundant form of marine debris, with global production rising and documented impacts in some marine environments, but the influence of plastic on open ocean ecosystems is poorly understood, particularly for microbial communities. Plastic marine debris (PMD) collected at multiple locations in the North Atlantic was analyzed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and next-g...
